Shield Compliance Partners with KeyPoint Credit Union

Shield platform technologies enable KeyPoint to reduce compliance costs while gaining efficiencies and competitive advantage.

Seattle, WA – September 8, 2020 – Shield Compliance (https://www.shieldbanking.com/), a comprehensive compliance management platform for banking legal marijuana-related businesses (MRBs), announced a partnership with California-based KeyPoint Credit Union to support its cannabis banking program. KeyPoint has implemented Shield Assure, Shield's compliance management tool, Shield Engage, the company's newly launched client onboarding system, and Shield Transact, which enables cashless, electronic payments.

"We believe cannabis businesses should have access to a true, transparent banking solution in every sense of the word," said Cole Saini, Director of Risk Management at KeyPoint Credit Union. "We selected Shield Compliance as our technology partner because it enables us to deliver on our AML/BSA requirements while reducing our reliance on expensive human capital to manage the program. As a result, we have lowered our costs significantly while improving the member experience."

KeyPoint Credit Union was established in 1979 to provide financial services to employees in the then-nascent Silicon Valley technology industry. Today it is one of California's largest credit unions with seven branches and more than 63,000 members. Backed by its Board of Directors, KeyPoint launched a cannabis banking pilot program in February, just as the coronavirus pandemic was hitting our shores. While initial interest from MRBs slowed as the economy came to a halt, KeyPoint's program quickly reached capacity in the following months and has been expanded to accommodate additional relationships.

"In the current economic climate, financial institutions are seeking new sources of non-interest income and new ways to expand and diversify their portfolios," said Tony Repanich, President and COO of Shield Compliance. "Shield's platform enables financial institutions to satisfy these objectives by making it easier to offer banking services to legal cannabis businesses. KeyPoint has a very thorough, transparent, and pragmatic approach to supporting this industry. We are excited to be working with them to provide an even more robust, compliant, and cost-effective cannabis banking program."

Shield Compliance supports financial institutions in legal cannabis states across the U.S. Its core platform technologies automate the compliance process and give financial institutions the structure they need to serve the cannabis industry efficiently.

  • Shield Assure, powered by the Shield Data Hub, aggregates financial institutions' transaction data and demographic records with restricted and publicly available information from state and local governments, seed to sale tracking, and client financial statements.

  • Shield Engage facilitates the new client application and underwriting process between MRBs and financial institutions in a simple, streamlined, and secure customer experience tailored to meet banking partners' operational requirements.

  • Shield  Transact enables cashless, electronic, commercial, and consumer payment programs to reduce cash.
